To study in Germany from India, Nigeria or Pakistan you need a German student visa, a national (D) visa. You apply online in the Consular Services Portal at the German mission for your place of residence, then attend an appointment for your fingerprints, photo and fee. Plan for a blocked account with 11,904 euros and a visa fee of 75 euros. Germany publishes no waiting times, and the missions say a decision can take several months, so apply as soon as you have your admission.
Key points
- Apply online first. All German missions are connected to the Consular Services Portal; in India it is obligatory for student visas.
- Your mission depends on where you live: in Nigeria that is Lagos for nearly everyone, in Pakistan Islamabad or Karachi by province.
- The appointment, not the decision, is often the bottleneck. Missions do not fast-track for a semester start.
- Incomplete files are not processed, and false documents lead to refusal and a possible entry ban.
- There is no appeal at the mission any more: you reapply or sue in Berlin within one month.
- You do not need an agent, and booking an appointment is free.
How the German student visa works
A German student visa is a national (D) visa for full-time study. Since 1 January 2025, every German visa section is connected to the online Consular Services Portal. You still need an appointment in person for your fingerprints, photo, fee and original documents, and the mission responsible for you stays the same.
The visa is usually issued for 90 days to one year. After arrival you register your address and, depending on your stay, apply for a residence permit at the local foreigners authority.

Documents and money, by country
The core is the same everywhere: proof of admission, proof that you can pay for your living costs, health insurance and your certificates. The details differ by mission. This table lists what each mission’s own pages state; always follow the checklist the portal shows you for your case.

The visa fee is 75 euros for applicants over 18, paid in local currency (8,300 Indian rupees in India) and not refunded if the visa is refused. In India the service provider adds its own fee, and the motivation letter must be your own: the missions say it “cannot be drafted by a third party”. Appointments and waiting lists
For many students the hardest step is getting the appointment, not the decision.
India
Appointments are booked through VFS Global, and the booking system is automated. Early appointments are possible only in extreme medical or humanitarian situations. The Consulate General in Mumbai has published a notice on a long student waiting list, with slots given in chronological order. An approaching winter semester, it says, is not a reason for a special appointment.
Nigeria
Lagos runs a waiting list processed strictly in chronological order, and booking is free. New applicants use the portal; if you are already on the waiting list, wait for your appointment instead of applying again.
Pakistan
Student visas are applied for in the Consular Services Portal. In November 2025 the embassy said it was processing a high volume of student applications in the order received. It suggests a letter from your university accepting late arrival, or an enrolment letter for the next semester, and asks you not to send status inquiries.

How long the visa takes
No official waiting or processing time exists. In September 2025 the German government told the Bundestag that it does not calculate average appointment waiting times across missions. It does not record average processing times either, because each case depends on complete documents and on document checks. Figures of a few weeks that you may read elsewhere are not official.
What the missions do say:
- India: processing “may take several months”; status inquiries are not answered in the first three months.
- Nigeria: no specific time frame and no expedited processing.
- Pakistan: processing times “highly vary” with the purpose and the quality of the documents.
Demand is high: Germany issued 90,188 visas for study and study preparation in 2024, about 20% more than in 2023. Online applications help, with waiting lists down 20 to 30% at some missions.

Why student visas are refused
Germany publishes no refusal rates by country, and no official list of refusal reasons. The reasons the missions themselves name are these:
- Incomplete documents. Lagos does not process incomplete applications and does not accept documents after the interview.
- False information or documents. The missions in India warn that your application will be refused and you may be banned from entering Germany. Lagos says such applications are rejected automatically and the applicant is entered into a warning database.
- The wrong mission or category. In India, an application at the wrong mission is not processed, and one booked in the wrong category is not accepted.
- Missing proof of money or tuition. The blocked account amount is fixed, and in India the first two semesters of tuition must be paid.
In October 2025, Germany’s ambassador to India was reported as saying the missions there reject about 25% of student visa applications. He also warned students not to trust agents too much. This is a press report, not a published statistic.

If your visa is refused
You can no longer appeal at the mission itself. The informal appeal, called remonstration, was abolished in India from 1 January 2024 and in Nigeria and Pakistan from 1 July 2025. The missions in India and Nigeria describe two options that remain:
- Apply again with a complete file and a new appointment, usually with a new fee.
- Sue at the Administrative Court in Berlin within one month of receiving the refusal. This costs a fee, and in your lawsuit you explain in detail why you think the refusal is unfounded.
The reason is stated in the refusal letter; the missions do not explain further by email. If you already paid into a blocked account, see our blocked account guide for how the money is released.

Agents, paid appointments and scams
You do not need an agent. The missions in India say all forms and information are free. Lagos says booking is free and it does not cooperate with agencies selling appointments. Treat any offer of a faster or guaranteed appointment for money as a warning sign. The Consulate General in Mumbai warns that no local agent or student counsellor can influence or schedule visa appointments, and Lagos blocks applicants who misuse its booking system.
